Associate Professor Yi Yang is a specialist spine and scoliosis surgeon with current public appointments at multiple hospitals. At the Royal Children's Hospital, he treats children with spinal deformities including scoliosis, kyphosis and spondylolisthesis. At the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Mr Yang looks after adult spinal trauma, degenerative and tumour conditions. His private appointments are at Epworth Hospital, with his clinics located in Richmond and Glen Waverley. Mr Yi graduated with honours from Monash University and completed his orthopaedic surgery training in Victoria. After obtaining his surgical fellowship, he completed complex spine surgery fellowships in the US and Canada. During his time at Rady’s Children’s Hospital in California, he furthered his specialisation in paediatric spinal deformity and scoliosis by studying and publishing about new treatments options such as tethering under the supervision of the current president of the scoliosis research society, Professor Peter Newton. Yi then completed an adult deformity and minimally invasive spine surgery fellowship in Toronto, Canada through the prestigious University of Toronto spine program with leading international spinal specialists.
Yi looks after all aspects of spinal conditions, ranging from degenerative conditions to deformity and scoliosis in children and adults. His focus is on performing spine operations safely and effectively with the use of the latest understanding and technology such as intra-operative guidance and computer navigation. He is currently the lead investigator for Royal Melbourne Hospital on the Australian Spine Registry. He is actively involved in research and teaching in conditions of the spine, lecturing for the University of Melbourne on spinal conditions.
